L\u2019atelier explorera les d\u00e9fis d\u2019ing\u00e9nierie, les virages technologiques et les m\u00e9thodologies de conception qui fa\u00e7onnent l\u2019industrie des semi-conducteurs, de la conception num\u00e9rique, de la v\u00e9rification et de l\u2019impl\u00e9mentation physique jusqu\u2019aux interfaces haute vitesse, \u00e0 l\u2019innovation en EDA, aux technologies de semi-conducteurs avanc\u00e9es et aux nouveaux flux de travail fond\u00e9s sur l\u2019IA. Les participants d\u00e9couvriront directement comment des ing\u00e9nieurs exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s abordent des d\u00e9fis de conception complexes, prennent des d\u00e9cisions cruciales, g\u00e8rent Chez CMC Microsystems, il a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 des initiatives nationales en microsyst\u00e8mes et en semi-conducteurs, soutenu d\u2019importants programmes d\u2019infrastructure et d\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me, et dirig\u00e9 des plateformes technologiques qui aident les chercheurs, les jeunes entreprises, les fabricants et les partenaires industriels canadiens \u00e0 transformer la recherche de pointe en solutions pratiques, r\u00e9utilisables et d\u00e9ployables. Au cours des cinq derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, il a obtenu plus de 1,15 million de dollars canadiens en subventions et en commandites de l\u2019industrie pour soutenir des initiatives de formation technologique et de d\u00e9veloppement de la main-d\u2019\u0153uvre.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019expertise technique d\u2019Udson s\u2019enracine dans la recherche sur le mat\u00e9riel quantique supraconducteur et \u00e0 base de silicium. Il est l\u2019auteur de publications \u00e9valu\u00e9es par des pairs dans des revues scientifiques de premier plan, dont Nature, Science et Nature Communications. Titulaire d\u2019un doctorat en physique, il a \u00e9galement suivi le programme Mini-MBA de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill. La question est de savoir si le Canada tirera parti de son avantage actuel ou s\u2019il laissera les retomb\u00e9es \u00e9conomiques les plus importantes se concr\u00e9tiser ailleurs. <\/p><p>Contrairement \u00e0 de nombreux secteurs de l\u2019industrie des semi-conducteurs, la photonique est l\u2019un des rares secteurs de technologie de pointe o\u00f9 le Canada poss\u00e8de d\u00e9j\u00e0 une expertise, des infrastructures et des capacit\u00e9s industrielles importantes. Qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019\u00e9tablissements de recherche, d\u2019installations de fabrication ou d\u2019entreprises concurrentielles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale, le Canada dispose de nombreux \u00e9l\u00e9ments n\u00e9cessaires pour b\u00e2tir une industrie nationale plus forte. <\/p><p>Le d\u00e9fi ne consiste pas \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir un avantage canadien, mais \u00e0 le d\u00e9ployer \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle. <\/p><p><b>Une technologie qui convient au Canada<\/b><\/p><p>Les semi-conducteurs rev\u00eatent une importance strat\u00e9gique, mais les diff\u00e9rents maillons de leur cha\u00eene de valeur ne sont pas tous \u00e9galement accessibles. Les usines de fabrication de silicium \u00e0 la fine pointe n\u00e9cessitent des investissements en capital tr\u00e8s importants ainsi qu\u2019un r\u00e9investissement constant pour demeurer concurrentielles.  <\/p><p>La photonique offre une occasion diff\u00e9rente.<\/p><p>Le Canada poss\u00e8de une longue histoire d\u2019expertise en communications optiques et en dispositifs photoniques, qui remonte au r\u00f4le de chef de file du pays dans le secteur des t\u00e9l\u00e9communications. Cette expertise se poursuit aujourd\u2019hui gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des entreprises comme Ranovus et TeraXion, \u00e0 des centres de recherche comme le Centre d\u2019optique, photonique et laser (COPL) de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval, aux programmes de recherche en photonique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Ottawa ainsi qu\u2019aux laboratoires de photonique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McMaster et de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique. Par l\u2019entremise de CMC Microsyst\u00e8mes et de l\u2019initiative FABrIC, le Canada a \u00e9galement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 des capacit\u00e9s nationales en soutien \u00e0 la conception, en d\u00e9veloppement de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s, en prototypage et en fabrication de pointe.  <\/p><p>Le Canada devrait se concentrer sur les domaines o\u00f9 les forces existantes peuvent se traduire par un avantage industriel \u00e0 long terme. La photonique est l\u2019un de ces domaines. <\/p><p><b>Pourquoi la photonique est importante<\/b><\/p><p>La photonique permet de transmettre, de traiter et de mesurer l\u2019information \u00e0 l\u2019aide de la lumi\u00e8re. \u00c0 mesure que les syst\u00e8mes num\u00e9riques gagnent en complexit\u00e9 et n\u00e9cessitent davantage de donn\u00e9es, la capacit\u00e9 de transf\u00e9rer l\u2019information rapidement et efficacement devient de plus en plus importante.  <\/p><p>Cela est particuli\u00e8rement pertinent dans trois secteurs strat\u00e9giques.<\/p><p><b>D\u00e9fense et s\u00e9curit\u00e9<\/b><\/p><p>Les syst\u00e8mes de d\u00e9fense modernes reposent sur le transfert rapide de donn\u00e9es, la d\u00e9tection de pr\u00e9cision, les communications s\u00e9curis\u00e9es et des architectures capables de fonctionner sous pression. La photonique soutient les communications \u00e0 large bande passante, les capteurs de pointe, les syst\u00e8mes LiDAR, les gyroscopes optiques et les infrastructures de communications s\u00e9curis\u00e9es.  <\/p><p>Alors que les pays accordent une importance croissante \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des cha\u00eenes d\u2019approvisionnement et aux capacit\u00e9s souveraines, l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ces technologies devient une consid\u00e9ration strat\u00e9gique plut\u00f4t que simplement technique.<\/p><p><b>Intelligence artificielle<\/b><\/p><p>L\u2019intelligence artificielle entra\u00eene une hausse rapide de la demande en infrastructures de centres de donn\u00e9es. La performance des syst\u00e8mes d\u2019IA d\u00e9pend non seulement des processeurs, mais aussi de la capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 transf\u00e9rer de grandes quantit\u00e9s de donn\u00e9es entre les serveurs, les commutateurs, les syst\u00e8mes de m\u00e9moire, les syst\u00e8mes de stockage et l\u2019\u00e9quipement de r\u00e9seau. Les technologies photoniques jouent un r\u00f4le croissant dans ces syst\u00e8mes en permettant un transfert de l\u2019information plus rapide et plus \u00e9co\u00e9nerg\u00e9tique.  <\/p><p>L\u2019IA contribue \u00e0 acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le d\u00e9veloppement des dispositifs photoniques gr\u00e2ce aux progr\u00e8s r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en conception, en simulation, en mise \u00e0 l\u2019essai, en d\u00e9bogage et en optimisation du rendement. La relation est de plus en plus r\u00e9ciproque : l\u2019IA stimule la demande en photonique, tandis qu\u2019elle contribue \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer le d\u00e9veloppement et la fabrication des technologies photoniques. <\/p><p><b>Technologies quantiques<\/b><\/p><p>La photonique constitue un pont important vers les syst\u00e8mes quantiques \u00e9mergents. Les syst\u00e8mes fond\u00e9s sur les photons sont compatibles avec les r\u00e9seaux de fibres optiques et les dispositifs d\u00e9ployables sur le terrain, ce qui conf\u00e8re \u00e0 la photonique des avantages pratiques dans des domaines comme les communications s\u00e9curis\u00e9es et la d\u00e9tection.  <\/p><p>Le leadership du Canada dans les technologies quantiques sera renforc\u00e9 par le maintien d\u2019une expertise parall\u00e8le en photonique et en mise en bo\u00eetier de semi-conducteurs. Une solide assise en photonique facilite le d\u00e9veloppement, au Canada, de mat\u00e9riel quantique, d\u2019interconnexions quantiques et de syst\u00e8mes de d\u00e9tection avanc\u00e9e. <\/p><p><b>Le Canada poss\u00e8de les fondements n\u00e9cessaires<\/b><\/p><p>L\u2019un des aspects les plus n\u00e9glig\u00e9s de l\u2019occasion qui s\u2019offre au Canada dans le domaine de la photonique est que bon nombre des actifs requis existent d\u00e9j\u00e0.<\/p><p>Le Centre de fabrication pour la photonique du Canada (CPFC) offre une capacit\u00e9 nationale de fabrication de semi-conducteurs compos\u00e9s et de dispositifs photoniques. L\u2019installation a soutenu des entreprises \u0153uvrant dans les r\u00e9seaux de fibres optiques, la d\u00e9fense et l\u2019a\u00e9rospatiale, l\u2019imagerie m\u00e9dicale, les centres de donn\u00e9es et les infrastructures avanc\u00e9es d\u2019IA. <\/p><p>Partout au pays, des organisations comme le C2MI, le 3IT, Alberta nanoFAB et 4D LABS, ainsi que des laboratoires universitaires et des partenaires industriels, apportent leur expertise en recherche, en fabrication, en mise \u00e0 l\u2019essai, en mise en bo\u00eetier et en commercialisation. <\/p><p>L\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me dans son ensemble est plus solide que de nombreux Canadiens ne le pensent. Le d\u00e9fi auquel le secteur est confront\u00e9 concerne moins l\u2019invention que la cr\u00e9ation de parcours efficaces, de la conception au prototype, du prototype \u00e0 la production, puis de la production \u00e0 l\u2019adoption par le march\u00e9. <\/p><p>Le Canada poss\u00e8de bon nombre des \u00e9l\u00e9ments n\u00e9cessaires. La plus grande occasion r\u00e9side dans leur mise en relation plus efficace. <\/p><p><b>Le d\u00e9fi de la commercialisation<\/b><\/p><p>Le Canada est reconnu pour l\u2019excellence de sa recherche. Le d\u00e9fi plus vaste a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 de transformer cette recherche en croissance industrielle soutenue. <\/p><p>Dans le domaine de la photonique, la commercialisation exige plus que l\u2019excellence de la recherche. Elle n\u00e9cessite un acc\u00e8s \u00e0 la fabrication, \u00e0 la mise en bo\u00eetier, \u00e0 la mise \u00e0 l\u2019essai, \u00e0 du personnel qualifi\u00e9 et \u00e0 des clients dispos\u00e9s \u00e0 adopter des technologies novatrices. <\/p><p>Les petites et moyennes entreprises ont souvent de la difficult\u00e9 \u00e0 passer de prototypes r\u00e9ussis \u00e0 la production commerciale. Les retards, la fragmentation des infrastructures et la d\u00e9pendance \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de la fabrication \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger peuvent ralentir la croissance et accro\u00eetre les co\u00fbts. <\/p><p>Un \u00e9cosyst\u00e8me canadien plus solide peut contribuer \u00e0 relever ces d\u00e9fis en maintenant au Canada une plus grande part des activit\u00e9s de conception, de fabrication et de d\u00e9veloppement de la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 intellectuelle. <\/p><p><b>Les prochaines mesures que le Canada devrait prendre<\/b><\/p><p>La strat\u00e9gie la plus efficace ne consiste pas en une s\u00e9rie de projets isol\u00e9s. Il s\u2019agit plut\u00f4t d\u2019une approche int\u00e9gr\u00e9e qui relie la recherche, la fabrication, le d\u00e9veloppement des talents et l\u2019adoption par l\u2019industrie. <\/p><p>Le Canada devrait se concentrer sur les priorit\u00e9s suivantes :<\/p><ul><li>Accro\u00eetre les capacit\u00e9s nationales de fabrication de technologies photoniques.<\/li><li>Renforcer les liens entre la conception, la fabrication, la mise en bo\u00eetier et la mise \u00e0 l\u2019essai.<\/li><li>Soutenir les PME dans le passage de leurs produits du prototype \u00e0 la production.<\/li><li>Harmoniser les investissements en recherche avec les occasions de commercialisation.<\/li><li>Former du personnel hautement qualifi\u00e9 capable de soutenir la croissance \u00e0 long terme de l\u2019industrie.<\/li><li>Int\u00e9grer plus d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment la photonique aux strat\u00e9gies de d\u00e9fense, d\u2019IA et de technologies quantiques. <\/li><\/ul><p>L\u2019objectif ne devrait pas \u00eatre le leadership technologique, mais plut\u00f4t un leadership \u00e9conomique fond\u00e9 sur les capacit\u00e9s canadiennes.<\/p><p><strong>Une occasion strat\u00e9gique<\/strong><\/p><p>La photonique se situe au croisement de plusieurs des tendances technologiques les plus importantes de la prochaine d\u00e9cennie. Les syst\u00e8mes de d\u00e9fense en ont besoin. Les infrastructures d\u2019IA en d\u00e9pendent. Les technologies quantiques y auront de plus en plus recours.   <\/p><p>Le Canada poss\u00e8de d\u00e9j\u00e0 une expertise de calibre mondial, des \u00e9tablissements respect\u00e9s, des entreprises \u00e9tablies et des actifs de fabrication essentiels. Peu de pays disposent d\u2019une assise aussi solide au d\u00e9part.  <\/p><p>La prochaine \u00e9tape ne consiste pas \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer l\u2019importance de la photonique. Elle consiste \u00e0 veiller \u00e0 ce que le Canada capte une plus grande part de la valeur qu\u2019il cr\u00e9e. <\/p><p>Si le Canada parvient \u00e0 r\u00e9unir ses talents, ses installations, ses entreprises et ses investissements publics au sein d\u2019une strat\u00e9gie industrielle coh\u00e9rente, la photonique pourra devenir plus qu\u2019une r\u00e9ussite en recherche.
