Montreal, QC and Hsinchu, Taiwan – March 16, 2026 – CMC Microsystems, Canada’s leader in enabling research and innovation in microsystems and advanced technologies, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a world-leading R&D organization from Taiwan, have signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement to strengthen collaboration in cutting-edge technology domains.

The agreement, effective January 1, 2026, establishes a framework for cooperation in key areas, including:

  • Semiconductors
  • Photonics
  • Electronics and Optoelectronics
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Internet of Things (IoT)

Under this non-binding agreement, the two organizations will explore opportunities for joint research, co-development, commercialization projects, and knowledge exchange through workshops, seminars, and researcher exchanges. The collaboration aims to accelerate innovation and foster global partnerships that benefit both Canadian and Taiwanese technology ecosystems.

Since its founding in 1973, ITRI has played a singular role in Taiwan’s economic transformation into an innovation-driven nation. Its focus on integrated circuit development spawned now-iconic companies like TSMC and delivered cutting-edge R&D to industry.

“As Canada builds a more resilient, competitive economy, CMC Microsystems is especially pleased to collaborate with ITRI. As stewards of FABrIC, the federal government’s five-year, $217M project to secure Canada’s future in semiconductors, we believe we can leverage complementary expertise and resources to drive innovation, strengthen industry-academic partnerships and unlock the potential of the semiconductor sector to contribute to a more dynamic Canada,” said Gordon Harling, President and CEO of CMC Microsystems.

Chaoyin Chi, Vice President and General Director of Industry, Science and Technology International Strategy Center at ITRI, added: “We are excited to partner with CMC Microsystems to explore new opportunities in next-generation technologies. Through closer collaboration, we aim to generate meaningful R&D outcomes and contribute to global technological progress.”
