Introduction to Flexcompute Tidy3D: A GPU-Native Multiphysics Software for Silicon Photonics

Supported by

FABrIC—funded by the Government of Canada and managed by CMC Microsystems—supports training and reskilling courses designed to equip industry and academia with the skills needed to strengthen the semiconductor industry in Canada.

If you are designing, modeling, or researching silicon photonics, join this webinar to learn how you can advance your work with Flexcompute Tidy3D. Tidy3D is a GPU-native multiphysics simulation software used to model photonic and electromagnetic devices with high fidelity and efficient performance at scale. It combines advanced finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solvers with additional physics modules for heat transfer, RF, and other coupled effects, allowing you to simulate large, complex designs through an intuitive Python API or web interface.

This webinar will cover:

  • An introduction to Tidy3D and how it enables large-scale, high-accuracy simulations

  • An overview of Tidy3D’s multiphysics capabilities, including FDTD, heat, and RF solvers.

  • A live demonstration of the workflow for setting up, running, and analyzing photonics simulations.

  • How to apply inverse design to automatically optimize device structures for performance targets.

Speakers

headshots - Simplifying System on Chip Design and Manufacture

Tom Chen
Senior Photonics Engineer
Flexcompute

Dr. Tom Chen earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University in 2020, focusing on optical probing of condensed matter systems in nanoscale. He later conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia University. After transitioning to industry, he primarily worked in the electromagnetic simulation space. He currently serves as a Senior Photonics Engineer at Flexcompute, where he leads the photonics application engineering team.

headshots - Simplifying System on Chip Design and Manufacture

Filipe Couto
Application Engineer
Flexcompute

Dr. Filipe Couto earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of São Paulo in 2024, focusing on the design and fabrication of photonic cavities integrated with colour centers. After graduating, he joined Flexcompute as an Application Engineer, where he supports users with electromagnetic modeling and simulation and develops application examples for learning and testing.
