TRIUMF

Canada’s particle accelerator centre — and a hub for discovery and innovation

Explore TRIUMF
Join us for a tour of TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre, as we explore the nation’s largest major academic research facility. This guided, 60-minute walking tour follows the path of the proton from its origin bound in a hydrogen atom, through the world’s largest cyclotron (accelerating up to 75% the speed of light!), and on to its destination in targets and detectors embedded in over 13 acres of experimental facilities spanning areas such as nuclear physics, radioisotopes and life sciences, materials sciences and more.

About TRIUMF
Established in 1968 in Vancouver, TRIUMF is Canada’s particle accelerator centre. The lab is a hub for discovery and innovation inspired by a half-century of ingenuity in answering some of nature’s most challenging questions. From the hunt for the smallest particles in our universe and the origin of the elements that make up our world to carrying out work that advances quantum computers or helps cure cancer, TRIUMF is pushing frontiers in research and training the next generation of leaders in science, medicine, and industry.

Please note:

  • Photography along the route is encouraged. Be sure to tag TRIUMF on social @TRIUMFlab!
  • No open-toed shoes
  • Guests are requested to advise if they have had either (i) a nuclear medicine scan (PET, SPECT) in the week prior to the tour, and/or (ii) an implanted medical device like a pacemaker.
  • Visitors will be required to walk, climb stairs, and stand for the duration of the tour.
  • No backpacks or large bags are allowed on the tour, but lockers are available on-site.
  • Guests are asked to review the Site Safety Note in advance, but no actions beyond this are required. We’ll review it together before embarking

Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute

Unraveling and exploiting complex quantum phenomena

Explore the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute

The UBC Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (UBC Blusson QMI) is the University of British Columbia’s first Global Research Excellence (GREx) Institute.

The institute’s extensive research infrastructure and expertise support a complete quantum innovation cycle: synthesizing and characterizing new materials, fabricating them into devices, and testing and optimizing their performance. This unique capability enables fundamental discoveries to be transformed into practical applications and innovative technologies.

UBC Blusson QMI researchers have filed 60 patents with potential applications in several sectors important to the BC and Canadian economy, including: clean energy, healthcare, mining, quantum computing and more.

Private companies and organizations regularly collaborate with UBC Blusson QMI, accessing twelve core facilities for research and development, as well as the expertise of our researchers, staff and technicians.

One of UBC Blusson QMI’s 12 leading-edge facilities, the Advanced Nanofabrication Facility (ANF), serves as a state-of-the-art device manufacturing space, bringing together partners from academia, industry, and government to bolster British Columbia’s position as a leader in next-generation devices and technologies, including quantum. Through its Nanofabrication Accelerator Program, ANF offers industry partners access ANF offers industry partners access to specialized services such as maskless photolithography, 100kV electron-beam lithography, photonic wire bonding, and a wide range of thin-film deposition and etching processes.

About the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute
The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (Blusson QMI) is a world-class research centre at the University of British Columbia. We are pushing the boundaries of quantum materials research to inspire fundamentally new technologies and archetype devices. Our mission is to create quantum materials by design, and we achieve our objectives collaboratively, and with the support of a community of creative, engaged and highly skilled faculty, students, and staff.
