High Performance connected conformal 4D millimetre wave Radar IoT Sensor
Project
There is rapidly growing global demand for high-performance, reliable, and privacy-preserving sensing technologies capable of operating in complex outdoor, industrial, and mobility environments. Conventional sensing solutions are often limited by lighting conditions, weather, privacy concerns, and high deployment costs. mmSense Technologies’ compact, connected sensor overcomes these limitations by operating reliably in all weather conditions while preserving privacy.
Millimetre-wave 4D radar captures range, velocity, azimuth, and elevation, enabling high-resolution detection, tracking, and classification of objects in three-dimensional space with motion context. These capabilities are critical for applications requiring accuracy, reliability, and resilience in dynamic or cluttered environments.
mmSense’s IoT sensor supports a wide range of applications, including smart parking, security monitoring, traffic management, industrial safety, automotive imaging radar, and environmental sensing.
This project will advance the technology from prototype to near-commercial readiness, validate performance through real-world deployments, and establish a scalable Canadian manufacturing pathway.
The Quantum and Nanotechnologies Research Centre at the National Research Council (NRC) is providing expertise in printed electronics to support the development of flexible and conformal radar antennas and sensors. Global semiconductor partners and end-users are providing feedback on next-generation 3D antenna designs and sensor systems, supporting application-driven development and accelerating commercialization. The University of Waterloo will provide advanced measurement facilities and research support to validate radar and antenna performance.
These collaborations will accelerate commercialization, strengthen industry partnerships, and support the development of highly qualified talent in Canada.
Building Canadian capacity
Developing and commercializing this technology domestically advances Canada’s technological sovereignty and security for critical sensing systems used in infrastructure, mobility, and safety. This reduces national dependence on foreign IP by supporting domestic advanced manufacturing, semiconductor innovation, transportation, security, and digital infrastructure.
Target markets are Canada, Japan, North America, and Europe initially, with additional adoption globally due to smart-city investments, infrastructure modernization, autonomous mobility development, and increasing security requirements.
These markets demand modular, scalable, and export-ready 4D radar solutions integrating sensing, connectivity, and edge intelligence while remaining cost-effective and manufacturable.
“This funding is a significant milestone for mmSense as we advance our connected 4D millimetre-wave radar technology toward real-world deployment and commercialization. With support from the Government of Canada and FABrIC, we are developing high-performance sensing systems that deliver accurate, real-time detection in complex environments while preserving privacy. This project strengthens Canada’s position in semiconductor innovation and advanced manufacturing and enables us to scale next-generation radar technologies for applications in smart infrastructure, mobility, and security.”
