Advanced Fabrication Processes for Next-Generation Semiconductor Hybrid Biosensing

Project

Advanced semiconductor biosensing devices are constrained by fabrication methods that struggle to produce ultra-thin, stable sensing membranes reproducibly at commercial scale.

Edmonton-based Norcada, a world leader in the fabrication and commercialization of solid-state nanopores, with applications testing support from the University of Ottawa, is developing new microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) processes for membrane and nanopore sensor chips, addressing needs in healthcare, biotechnology, environmental monitoring, and advanced computing. More capable platforms could improve genomic and proteomic analysis, enable earlier disease detection, support real-time contaminant monitoring, and contribute to neuromorphic systems.

The project combines thin film layers along with wafer-scale integration of two-dimensional materials to achieve atomic-scale thickness control and create stacked heterostructures with improved stability and performance.

These materials will be incorporated into commercial chip platforms, with new device designs validated through parallel fluidic testing to assess long-term stability, ionic transport, noise performance, and biomolecule sensing.

Norcada will lead fabrication process development and product commercialization, while uOttawa researchers will contribute expertise in nanopore science and device testing.

The resulting processes and device architectures are expected to enable new commercial product lines based on ultra-thin membranes and 2D-material sensing chips that are not currently available from any manufacturer worldwide.

Building Canadian capacity

Establishing capabilities in advanced membrane fabrication, heterostructure integration, and device testing will strengthen the domestic ecosystem by expanding national expertise in semiconductor manufacturing and materials integration.

Connecting facilities and research teams from material growth through commercialization reduces reliance on foreign suppliers, grows the national talent pool, and improves supply-chain resilience.

"This funding from FABrIC is a game-changer for us. We're developing fabrication processes that no one in the world offers commercially today, and this support lets us move fast enough to get there first. Canada has a real edge here — between Norcada's manufacturing and our partnership with the University of Ottawa, we have the pieces to own a market that's heading past a billion dollars globally by 2032. What makes this meaningful beyond our business is that every process we develop, every job we create, and every piece of IP stays right here in Canada. That's how you build real semiconductor sovereignty — not by talking about it, but by funding companies that are actually making the chips."
—Hooman Hosseinkhannazer, President & CEO, Norcada Inc.
Norcada

Norcada is a quantum technology, advanced materials, and nanotechnology company specializing in the development and manufacturing of MEMS devices, photonics, and quantum platforms for scientific, industrial, and dual-use applications. Founded in 2001 in Edmonton, Alberta—home to a major nanotechnology cluster in Canada—Norcada operates state-of-the-art MEMS and photonics fabrication facilities. The company’s nano-MEMS product lines serve biophysics, genomics, and proteomics through nanopore devices, liquid and electrochemistry cells, and thin film platforms for electron and X-ray microscopy. Norcada manufactures single-mode DFB lasers for industrial sensing, environmental monitoring, and space technology. The company’s quantum technology portfolio—including a quantum sensing platform, optomechanical resonator chips, a quantum photonics substrate platform, and detector packaging—enables applications spanning biomedical sensing, defence, and secure communications. By bridging nanofabrication and quantum science, Norcada delivers dual-use platforms where advances in biophysics and life sciences directly translate into quantum sensing and national security capabilities.
