Ranovus Inc.
ODIN® Optical Engine Fast-track Prototype Development (“Raptor”)
Project
An existential power crisis threatens scalability in hyperscale AI data centres. Ranovus Inc.’s Raptor project is a fast-track response to urgent market demand for validated co-packaged optics (CPO) to help address it.
Raptor will develop and prototype a next-generation version of Ranovus’ ODIN ® optical engine (OE) for interconnecting AI accelerator and edge-AI in next-generation data centre and edge applications. It will deliver 6.4 Terabits/second aggregate bandwidth across 32 channels operating at 200Gbps each.
ODIN® is a single‑chip, monolithic electro‑photonic integrated circuit (EPIC) platform that delivers high‑density, low‑power optical I/O for data centre and AI and machine learning workloads. It combines silicon photonics transceivers, drivers, transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), and control logic on a single die, enabling multi‑terabit optical interconnects in a small footprint.
ODIN® directly addresses the exponential growth in demand for power, threatening the scalability of AI infrastructure in hyperscale data centres. It reduces power consumption by 65% and demonstrates that CPO is essential for sustainable AI scaling.
The Raptor project will drive local job creation at Ranovus for high-speed ASIC design, silicon photonics integration, test engineering, and operations. It will see Ranovus expand its local collaboration with the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) and with Jabil Photonics Ottawa for advanced packaging of semiconductors. This collaboration strengthens Canada’s semiconductor supply chain resilience by reducing dependence on offshore manufacturing for critical components.
Building Canadian capacity
Raptor enables the inclusion of Canadian-designed technology in sovereign AI and defence programs. It positions Ranovus as a trusted supplier for secure semiconductor sources and will help to solidify Canada’s reputation as a credible participant in the global CPO market.
Ranovus’ Raptor project fulfills FABrIC’s mandate to demonstrate repeatable models for Canadian semiconductor product development. From design through volume manufacturing and export growth, it builds domestic capacity in critical photonics and advanced packaging initiatives.
"As AI becomes foundational to how Canada competes, innovates, and protects its interests, we need trusted, sovereign sources for the semiconductor technology underneath it. FABrIC’s support for Raptor lets us accelerate getting the next generation of ODIN® to market, proving that Canadian-designed co-packaged optics can serve the most demanding AI workloads — built here, deployed here, and trusted by our allies. We’re grateful to the Government of Canada and FABrIC for backing sovereign capability where it belongs: in Canada."
