LightEdge: Scalable Photonic Chiplets for Far-Reach Connectivity
Project
AI data centre and cloud infrastructure growth is rapidly outpacing current interconnects, driving demand for multi-terabit optical engines. However, existing solutions face growing limitations in electrical I/O reach, power consumption, and packaging scalability. Today’s accelerators, memory pools, and switching fabrics require a transition beyond 1.6T interconnects.
WhalePiX’s LightEdge photonic chiplets enable ultra-high bandwidth at ultra-low energy per bit, providing a scalable product platform. Combining cutting-edge silicon photonic innovation with production-grade packaging, the project will deliver robust, manufacturable chiplets for support multi-terabit data transmission.
WhalePiX will draw on the expertise of Canadian-based Tier-1 packaging and manufacturing capabilitiesand AI-assisted wafer-level testing, data intelligence, and automation of characterization workflows. Quantino, a Québec-based high-tech incubator, will provide access to shared photonics infrastructure, along with support in commercialization and IP strategy.
Optical testing and high-speed transmission validation will be carried out in close collaboration with academic partners, leveraging Mitacs-supported internships to support the training of highly qualified personnel.
Building Canadian capacity
By combining WhalePiX’s design expertise with Canadian-based advanced packaging capabilities and AI-driven test intelligence, this project will bridge research and production, advancing domestic technology readiness from laboratory validation to pre-commercial manufacturing. By anchoring packaging and testing know-how within Canada, this project also strengthens domestic supply-chain resilience.
“This support is critical in bridging the gap between innovation and manufacturing in Canada. It enables WhalePiX to scale cutting-edge photonic technologies and deliver globally competitive solutions for AI infrastructure.”
