Scalable MEMS Chemical Sensor Array Development for Health Monitoring

Project

Laboratory-scale fabrication of Noze Inc.’s high-density silicon MEMS chemical sensor arrays has demonstrated strong potential for breath-based health monitoring. The next step is to develop a controlled, repeatable, and scalable manufacturing process suitable for commercialization and broader deployment.

Montréal-based Noze’s silicon platform uses a 64-element array of independently functionalized sensing elements to detect trace volatile organic and inorganic compounds in breath. It has shown clinically relevant performance in proof-of-concept studies. A version of this sensor has been approved by Health Canada and is being used in clinical trials.

The project is focused on two manufacturing steps. First, Noze will collaborate with the Printability and Graphic Communications Institute (ICI) to scale the synthesis process for a selected subset of nanomaterial sensing inks deposited on silicon substrates to form active thin films. ICI will characterize them to verify physicochemical properties, stability, and specifications.

Second, the team will refine micro-deposition of multiple sensing materials on micromachined silicon devices, setting parameters for droplet volume, placement accuracy, and curing to support uniform thin-film formation. Multi-run testing will assess material consistency, array reproducibility, and device-to-device performance, advancing fabrication from TRL 5 to TRL 7 for validation in relevant manufacturing environments.

Building Canadian capacity

Laboratory-scale MEMS sensor fabrication will be converted into documented, repeatable workflows for nanomaterial synthesis, precision micro-deposition, and silicon-device integration. Defined process windows, quality characterization, and pilot-scale validation will generate transferable know-how that supports higher yields, reliable production, and future commercialization of specialized sensor chips.

Retaining this process IP in Canada and reducing dependence on foreign foundries strengthens a resilient local supply chain while expanding domestic capability in advanced sensing. The resulting manufacturing readiness directly benefits end-use industries – including healthcare, defence, environmental monitoring, and wellness technologies – by enabling access to reliable, scalable, and high-performance chemical sensing hardware.

“By scaling our MEMS sensor manufacturing, this funding drives our transition from clinical prototypes to a real-time breathalyzer product, delivering reliable early diagnostics at the point-of-care.”

Noze Inc.

Noze is a Montreal-based medical technology startup redefining disease detection by unlocking the power of breath. Leveraging its proprietary, AI-powered “nose-on-a-chip,” Noze captures and decodes the molecular biomarker fingerprints made up of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath, transforming them into real-time clinical insights.

Designed for point-of-care deployment, Noze’s platform is advancing a new class of non-invasive, low- cost diagnostics across a range of applications, including cancer, respiratory conditions, and infectious diseases. Backed by strategic collaborations with organizations such as NASA and the Gates Foundation, Noze is pioneering the universal breath panel – enabling instantaneous, decentralized screening across diseases, at global scale.

No needles. No swabs. No waiting. Just diagnosis, reimagined.
