MEMS-actuators for AI-based temperature compensation enabling enhanced ADAS camera systems

Project

Automotive Advanced-Driving-Assistance-Systems (ADAS) cameras are now standard, but like most vehicle parts, they’re affected by heat and cold. Because they’re fixed-focus, they can be affected by temperature-induced defocus. Upcoming reductions in pixel size will further aggravate this issue.

To keep ADAS cameras consistently in focus, Sheba Microsystems has developed a MEMS actuator that moves the image sensor along the optical axis to maintain sharp images. This technique enables the adoption of higher resolution ADAS image sensors that support high-performance cameras for Level 2 and Level 3 autonomy applications.

Sheba is leveraging more than 30 of its relevant international patents to enable the use of higher-resolution image sensors and micro actuator temperature compensation to feed algorithms to command ADAS functions.

The company’s silicon-based technology is unique. It can satisfy performance requirements and reliability in harsh automotive environments across temperatures ranging from -40°C to 150°C.

Sheba’s technology also enables high-performance under low-light conditions by combining smaller pixel sizes with larger aperture cameras.

Building Canadian capacity

Sheba will collaborate with Teledyne MEMS and the nanoFAB at the University of Alberta to form a Canadian design, prototyping, testing, and high-volume production team.

The commercialization of the company’s IP positions Canada as a home for emerging automotive silicon technology essential for advanced autonomous driving. Beyond supplying AI-enabled MEMS-driven temperature compensation for ADAS cameras, the company’s actuator technology has potential applications for AR/VR cameras, InCabin automotive cameras, action cameras and humanoid robots.

“We are grateful for the Government of Canada and FABrIC support that enables this all-Canadian partnership with the NanoFAB at the University of Alberta and Teledyne MEMS to cover design, prototyping, and large-scale production and testing of the Sheba Silicon micro technology. The Sheba technology enables further development of autonomous automotive technology in Canada and prepare it for market entry.”
